Cherry season in Washington has officially kicked off! The excitement has been building for the start of cherry season and Chelan Fresh Sales Director Tim Evans stated “the crop is lighter than last year, so we anticipate a lot of large fruit. We had a few frost events this spring that thinned the crop down pretty significantly in some areas.” Evans, who has been checking on orchards every week since the snow melted, did note that the fruit on the trees is very clean and should produce larger cherries in general. “One thing for sure, when cherries are big, sweet and clean, it’s a big hit with consumers.” Harvest will begin with smaller volumes during the first part of June and increase with larger volumes as June progresses.

COVID-19 has created unique challenges but Cherry Farmers and Cherry Shippers are prepared to create social distancing throughout the orchards and protect workers who harvest and pack this treasured summer fruit.
