LYNNWOOD, Wash., Sept. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Fuel Up to Play 60 and Chelan Fresh are increasing student access to more nutritious food choices in schools. Chelan Fresh, one of Washington state's largest suppliers of apples and pears and the nation's largest provider of fresh cherries, will provide Fuel Up to Play 60, the nation's leading in-school wellness program, portable breakfast/salad bar carts to be used in 15 Fuel Up to Play 60 schools in 11 states across the country.

In the United States, more than 13 million students come from food insecure households that lack the means to get enough nutritious food on a regular basisi. The portable breakfast/salad bar carts are an innovative solution generously donated by Chelan Fresh to Fuel Up to Play 60 schools and will reach nearly 9,000 students, serving an estimated 1.3 million meals annually.

Finding new ways to serve nutritious options in schools (like low-fat and fat-free dairy products, fruits, vegetables and whole grains) can make a difference in helping provide all students with the nutrition they need to fuel their full potential. The rolling carts from Chelan Fresh will provide easy solutions to school nutrition and meal service teams, allowing them the opportunity to position the cart in areas that provide students easy access to nutritious foodsii. Cooling trays and assets on the portable cart also provide easy serving opportunities reducing the need for ice and other resources needed to keep food cool, as well as help provide easy clean-up for school food service and maintenance staff.

The portable breakfast/salad bar carts will be provided to recipient schools in Arizona, California, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, South Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Washington in time for the 2018-2019 school year.

This effort marks Chelan Fresh's support of Fuel Up to Play 60 for the seventh consecutive year, reinforcing the company's ongoing commitment to help K-12 schools improve or expand their nutrition and physical activity programs through Fuel Up to Play 60.

US Licensed to Dazzle

US apple growers are the first in the world to be licensed to grow the New Zealand Dazzle variety

The US is the first country outside New Zealand to be licensed to grow and sell the new Dazzle apple, launched last year by Fruitcraft - a collaboration between New Zealand’s three largest apple growers, Mr Apple, Bostock New Zealand and Freshmax.

Fruitcraft announced today (23 May) that it has signed a license agreement with US Washington State growers Chelan Fruit and Gebbers Farms, who farm 14,000 and 13,500 acres respectively. 

Fruitcraft manager Steve Potbury said Chelan Fruit and Gebbers Farm have been granted the rights for production in the US and marketing rights for the fruit they grow.

“This is the first step in the global licensing of the Dazzle programme," he said in a statement. "It gives growers in the US the ability to grow Dazzle and sell it around the world. Chelan Fruit and Gebbers Farm have committed to planting 3m trees over 12 years, and they will be marketing their fruit through their jointly owned company Chelan Fresh, one of the world’s largest apple sellers.

“This will strengthen the positioning of Dazzle on the global markets. More fruit will help establish the market more quickly and create a stronger following for the brand internationally.” Potbury added.

President of Gebbers Farms Cass Gebbers and CEO of Chelan Fruit Reggie Collins said they anticipate the first commercial plantings to start in 2020.

“The climate in Washington will be perfect for growing Dazzle," said Collins. “Dazzle is very well suited to the US market. It has all the qualities which appeal to US consumers. It is a big, highly coloured and very sweet apple.”

Chelan Fresh Marketing CEO Tom Riggan added that the Dazzle apple offers Washington Growers opportunities for sales in the US and for exports.

Dazzle branded apples are grown on trees of the variety PremA129, bred in New Zealand, trialled over many years and owned by Prevar Limited.  Prevar licensed global production and marketing rights to Fruitcraft.

Over 100,000 PremA129 trees are now planted in New Zealand, with a further 250,000 trees to be planted this winter.
