Countdown to Cherry Season 2017

Cherry Blossoms

Chelan Fresh employees and growers think spring is one of the best seasons of the year. Spring means the start of our Chelan Fresh cherry season is less than 80 days away. And as the days get longer and the sun gets warmer, the cherry trees leave the cold of winter behind and burst into blossom. Each little white flower holds the promise of a ripe, juicy cherry.

As you walk through the orchards you can hear the spring breeze rustle the leaves and the air is filled with an incredibly sweet scent of cherry sweet-red-cherries-chelan-fresh.pngblossoms. As you get closer to the trees, you’ll also hear the buzzing of hard working honeybees, gathering nectar and pollen for their hives. These diligent workers also pollinate the lovely blossoms, allowing us to bring you the sensational cherries you have come to expect from our growers. Cherries are bursting with nutrition. They are loaded with antioxidents and anti-inflammatory properties along with vitamin C, potassium and contain about 3g of fiber per serving.

Look for Chelan Fresh cherries at your local retailer in early June.

Favorite part of working at Chelan Fresh: I really enjoy the Chelan Fresh staff that I work with and the sense of team we incorporate into everything we do.

Natividad Rubio came to the United States hoping that the orchards of North Central Washington were a place he could find a better future. He has spent the last 30 years working and raising a family and is now a successful land-owner, husband and father of six college graduates.

Through hard work and perseverance, Natividad and his family are leaders in their community and now want to give back to students seeking to obtain a college degree. The Rubio family has created a scholarship for students from North Central Washington that are seeking to attend college and carve out a bright future.

Here at Chelan Fresh we appreciate the growers and their families who continue to produce our quality Mountain Grown Fruit. We also honor their commitment to making the communities where they live a better place for future generations.

For the Love of Fruit

AppleFondue1.13.16-2-978567-edited.jpgEach year as the New Year comes around we make resolutions and promises to eat better and exercise more.  About now those resolutions have lost their New Years glimmer and we are losing faith that we can actually achieve what we set out to do.  Today is a new day- Go ahead and finish off your box of Valentines Day candy and then return to that reasonable plan to improve your health.

You can start by consuming fresh Washington apples and pears from Chelan Fresh.  Both areApples_Fridge_Facebook.png high in fiber and nutrients, but low in calories.  And they are readily available in your local grocery store or club warehouse.  Apples and pears are filling too, so they help curb those mid-morning and late afternoon hanger pangs associated with reduced calorie diets.

It is never too late to do the right thing, so stop beating yourself up, get back in the saddle and continue your plan to eat healthier and get out and exercise more.   After all it is the month of love, start by loving yourself.

Favorite Apple: Honeycrisp – I love the crispness of this apple. The flavor is sweet, but not too sweet like a Fuji. The apple tends to be juicy and the skin is generally light, unlike a Red Delicious. I do also love a Granny Smith!  The tartness is refreshing on a hot summer day!

Favorite Cherry: Lapin – This cherry tends to be firm, sweet and juicy.

Favorite part of working at Chelan Fresh: I really enjoy being around my co-workers every day. I love a teamwork atmosphere and the group of people I work with all have that attitude. It's almost as if we are family. I really love interacting with our customers too. I've built some great relationships that have extended outside of work. Being around and being involved with honest, caring, positive and fun people is key for my mental health as well as my personal productivity. I want to work hard while having fun doing it!

Favorite thing to do outside of work: I love being outdoors, so anything I can do outdoors is my favorite way to spend my time out of work. I love hiking, fishing, snowmobiling, riding quads and even yard work!

What's New

December marked the official launch of SugarBee™, the new apple sensation from Chelan Fresh. SugarBee™ is a Honeycrisp cross exclusive to Chelan Fresh. Despite limited susugarbee.pngpply, consumer response was incredible. Retailers and consumers alike, raved about the crisp texture and wonderful flavor of the new SugarBee™. We apologize if you did not get to experience this year's crop of SugarBee, but your chance to do so next fall will be better.

We know our growers will need to produce a lot more of this apple over the next five years to meet expected demand.

Winter has dusted the trees with snow, but the life of a grower stays busy all the same! This Dave Robison.pngtime of year you will find crews hard at work pruning the non-fruit bearing limbs from the dormant trees. This practice encourages the trees to focus their energy on growing fruit for the coming year. For our first series post, we caught up with Dave Robison to find out what he’s been up to and what he loves about his work.
